NFL Super Bowl Milestones of the 2000s: Defining Moments on the Biggest Stage
From 2000 through 2009, the Super Bowl became a showcase for shifting eras, new stadiums, and signature players who helped define modern NFL history. The decade opened with Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000, when the St. Louis Rams, nicknamed the Greatest Show on Turf, held off the Tennessee Titans in a 23 to 16 thriller in Atlanta. The image that still sticks is the final play, with the Titans tackled one yard short of tying the game. It was also a reminder that the Super Bowl can be decided by inches, even when high powered offenses dominate the headlines.
The early 2000s quickly turned into the age of the New England Patriots. Their first title came in Super Bowl XXXVI, played after the 2001 season, when they upset the St. Louis Rams 20 to 17 in New Orleans. Tom Brady, still early in his career, led the winning drive and Adam Vinatieri kicked the last second field goal. That win launched a dynasty that shaped the decade. New England returned to win Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, beating the Carolina Panthers 32 to 29 in a game known for late scoring bursts and a dramatic finish. They followed it with Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, a 24 to 21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. By the end of that stretch, the Patriots had three championships in four seasons, and Brady had become one of the defining quarterbacks of his generation.
Not every milestone was about a repeat champion. Super Bowl XL, played in Detroit, marked the Pittsburgh Steelers return to the top with a win over the Seattle Seahawks. It was also notable for Jerome Bettis playing in his hometown and leaving as a champion. A year later, Super Bowl XLI in Miami brought a different kind of first: it was the first Super Bowl played in rain. The Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29 to 17, and Peyton Manning earned his first Super Bowl title and MVP.
The decade also delivered some of the most replayed finishes in Super Bowl history. Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona, ended the New York Giants run as underdogs with a 17 to 14 upset of the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. The game is forever tied to the helmet catch by David Tyree, a single scramble drill moment that swung the outcome and prevented a perfect season. Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa produced another iconic play at the goal line, when Pittsburgh wide receiver Santonio Holmes made a toe tapping catch in the corner of the end zone to beat the Arizona Cardinals 27 to 23. Earlier in that same game, James Harrison returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown just before halftime, one of the biggest momentum swings the Super Bowl has ever seen.
Stadiums and locations became part of the story too. The decade included Super Bowls in New Orleans, Houston, Jacksonville, Detroit, Miami, Tampa, and two in Glendale, reflecting the league’s expanding footprint and the rise of newer venues. The 2000s closed with a landmark moment in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, when the New Orleans Saints won their first championship by beating the Indianapolis Colts 31 to 17. Drew Brees earned MVP honors, and a daring onside kick to start the second half became the defining gamble of the game.
Taken together, the 2000s show how quickly the Super Bowl spotlight can shift. A dynasty can rise from an upset, a perfect season can vanish on one improbable catch, and a long waiting franchise can finally break through. Those are the kinds of clear, memorable milestones that make the decade so quiz friendly and so fun to revisit.
